Developing games independently – past, present and future.
You have probably at some point in your life, considered creating a game. Most people have that urge to create buried deep within them. Occasionally people give in to this urge and actually create their own games. When games platforms like the C64, Spectrum, Atari and Amiga were available, many people who were creating games had enough of a success commercially that they ended up creating companies. Some of these companies even exist to this day.
Independent developers have been around since the advent of computers. Many of the biggest companies who produce games were originally independent developers (the term “indie” can mean many things, but to me it means a company that produces their own games using their own money).
These days, most indie developers are very small. It is hard for them to find a voice and a place to sell their games. This site is dedicated to making the life of indie developers, especially ones based in Britain, easier. We hope that over time, we will be able to encourage young developers to consider their own start-up rather than going to work for someone else. We hope to foster that original pioneering spirit that made early British made independent games so great. We also hope to connect the makers with a potential audience for their games and to introduce gamers to new talent.
There are many great indie developers here in the UK and over the next few months we will be highlighting a few of them.
Hope you like the site! – Phil Carlisle (British Indie).
Fantastic. I’ve been hoping for a site like this, as the scene is rapidly growing here in Blighty, and there’s quite a community forming, which perhaps needs a separate voice. This is great news! Good luck with it, and I’ll certainly be keeping up with it.
Cheers,
Jasper
Thanks Jasper, I do hope we can help grow the indie developer community here in Blighty.
Phil.
Nice one, Phil. I’ll be on my best behaviour, at least for a little while
As a budding indie game developer, this is excellent Phil.
Now can you put up a map so I can work out if anyone else near Sunderland is an indie! ;o)
I’ll be looking around for some developer map soon. I think it would be great to have a map and a method of arranging a local meeting.
Site looks good, hopefully I can contribute once I have some dev skills, in the mean time its off to college
